Welcome to Homeschool Hub

Screen Shot 2015-04-27 at 4.43.39 PMWelcome to Homeschool Hub, spring has finally arrived in Maine! What does that mean for us that homeschool our children? More time outside to explore all the wonderful things that pop up this time of year. The crocuses are coming up, the birds start chirping, and the sun is bright early in the morning. This is such an awesome time of year, especially after such a long winter like the one we just had.

It is a great time to get out the unit studies and note booking pages and to do something a little less stringent because as most of us know, all the children (I am just a big child when it comes to this) want to enjoy the opportunity to take off the heavy coats and soak up the sunshine which is oh so good for our health and attitudes.

In case you do not know what a unit study is – a unit study is a compilation of information and activities that are all linked to one topic giving you a well-rounded study spanning several subject areas. For example, let’s say we are going to do a unit study on birds. The one linked here includes subject areas of math, music (fine arts), language arts, and science among others that you can add. There are books you can have the child read, websites to visit and pintables to use for enrichment. Just type into google birds unit study and you will come up with many to choose from. Now do not feel that you have to complete everything in the unit study or that you cannot add to it. These prepared unit studies are a guide to help you teach your child. There may be some things that your child will not like to do and that is ok. Make learning fun and they will want to learn all the time. 😉 What is cooler than a virtual owl pellet dissection for a science lesson??

Screen Shot 2015-04-27 at 4.43.33 PMNotebooking is just making pages in a notebook to share what you have learned. You can either find free stuff online that can include a coloring page, a set of report pages, a drawing or a focus page for example, you may do a page on the design of a state flag and what the symbols on it represent that would go with a notebook that you do on a certain state. You may include a page on the state flower, bird, constitution, and the list goes on and on. You can find many pages at www.notebooking.com and again you can do a google search for notebooking pages and find a plethora of options. Another great site for well-done notebooking pages is www.handsofachild.com. Here you will also find lapbooking options but we will cover that at another time.

Please feel free to share your favorite notebooking or unit study website. Homeschool Hub’s goal is to share information with homeschoolers to help them with curriculum options, laws, field trip opportunities and events around the state of Maine. Thanks for stopping by and I look forward to getting to know you.

Happy Homeschooling!
